Course GoalsOne of the broader goals of a middle school is to transition students from elementary to high school. In terms of English class, we can narrow this down to say that our goal is to foster active and engaged writers who are able to write with purpose, to tailor their writing to a particular audience, to engage their reader with rich detail or well-supported fact and who use discussion and peer evaluation to grow as learners and independent thinkers.
Course ContentThere are three components of the modern English classroom: writing, grammar and vocabulary. All three of these are integral parts of the curriculum and have been proven more valuable when taught together rather than in isolation. Knowledge of grammar usage and vocabulary are essential building blocks of great writing. Each week we will review one-two aspects of English grammar and incorporate this into our writing and peer editing. Every second week, we will begin a new unit of vocabulary and will focus on understanding each term's meaning, part of speech and use in dialogue and in writing.
